Comeback and farewell tour at the same time: del potro in Buenos Aires
Juan Martin del Potro was certainly one of the biggest talents of his generation. The greatest success celebrated the “Tandil tower” in 2009 when he won the US Open – the first and only Grand Slam victory of his career. A total of 22 titles took the Argentine on the tour.
But the career of the man with the crashing forehand belongs but also that he had always struggled with injuries and therefore had long breaks. The last match presented Del Potro in the summer of 2019 – after a break of the kneecap he could not return to the tour so far.
This is changing now in February, because the 33-year-old arrives coming week in the home game at the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires his comeback on the ATP tour – it will be at the same time his farewell to the professional tennis. DEL POTRO announced his career end in an emotional press conference. His fans get the chance to see him once again. At the beginning of the kick-off, he meets Landsmann and friend Federico Delbonis.
The knee still causes problems
Continuous pain in the knee no longer suggests that Del PoTro plays longer on the tour. “It’s more a say goodbye as a return,” said Del Potro with tears. “My knee has become a nightmare.”
But not only the knee prepared him in his career problems, even the wrist plagued the “tannm of Tandil” again and again. “I’ve tried many treatments on my knee, but found no real solution until today. I never thought that I will stop with the tennis, but I just want to be a 33-year-old who can live without pain. It’s One of the most difficult decisions that I had to meet. “
DEL POTRO has wildcards for the Argentina Open and Rio Open. That will be his last two tournaments. “I have been sleeping with pain for two and a half years. Now I fight for health and therefore to get more quality of life,” says Argentine.
