On the last matchday of qualification in South America, the Peruvian national team has kept hope for participating in the World Cup in Qatar this year.

The hosts defeated in the National Stadium in Lima on Tuesday evening (local time) Paraguay 2-0 (2: 0) and thus secured the fifth place for the table and a relegation chance.

Peru, who had again qualified for the World Cup in Russia in 2018 for the first time since 36 years, went against Paraguay in the fourth minute through a hit by Gianluca Lapadula. Yoshimar Yotún increased in the 41st minute to 2: 0.

Four teams from South America qualify directly, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador and Uruguay had previously solved their ticket for the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year.

The fifth-placed from South America goes into the relegation against a team from Asia, the winner of the encounter between the United Arab Emirates and Australia.
